Cutting The Crap: Republicans at the Health Care Summit (Part 1)

I’m ba-a-a-a-ck…

It’s time to bury some of the bullshit the Republicans have been throwing out there regarding health insurance reform.This will have to be done in several installments; there really is too much to cover in one article.

I watched the entire health care summit, and I was truly impressed that President Obama could keep order in such obvious chaos. On the one hand, you had the Democrats who were trying to make the case for various aspects of their bills, and why the reforms were necessary. On the opposite side were the Republicans, who seemed to have no idea why they were there, and could think of doing nothing except trying to score political points with their brain-dead followers.

For those of you wondering, no, I have not abandoned this blog. But I'm developing a new business, and we've reached a crucial point, so a lot of my time has been used trying to get that going. I will be back and posting at least once a day very shortly. In the meantime, here's a short story for your enjoyment. At least, I hope you enjoy it.

I’m laughing here, but what does “once upon a time” mean, anyway? It’s in so many of your cute little stories, but have you ever thought about what it means? It’s just so much babble. First of all, there is no such thing as “time,” to speak of; that’s just something you people use to mark the distance between life and death. And frankly, you would live a whole lot longer if you simply abolished it, and lived your life not thinking about it. Have you ever noticed that, as you get older, time seems to speed by much faster? That’s a function of your obsession with it, you know. Abolish the concept and, ironically, you’ll live longer and happier.

An open letter to the Democratic politicians holding up health care reform…

Why are you so afraid of everything?

I thought the election of Barack Obama meant the virtual end of the Democratic Leadership Council’s (DLC) dangerous and wrongheaded influence, but I guess I was wrong. This is a crucial time in the history of this country, and we have a smallish, but somewhat significant contingent of Democrats who seem to think the public will vote them out if they act boldly and with conviction.

How stupid are you people?

To you Democratic politicians who are constantly worried about being kicked out of office on your asses for acting boldly and with conviction; you deserve to be kicked out of office – don’t let the door hit you on the way out. You don’t have the political sense to even hold office, let alone keep it.  And what is the point of continually winning elections and keeping your office if you don’t plan to do anything good with it? Do the American people need that? Is that why we elected you people in the first place? No. We elected you to represent us and stand up for our interests; no good is served by having spineless pussies represent our interests.

Are Progressives REALLY Part of the "Democratic Base"?

Now, about this habit we progressives have of referring to ourselves as the Democratic “base.”

Why do we do that?

You’ve heard this repeatedly over the last few months, right? Sure you have.

Whenever a bunch of millionaire pundits sit around a table in front of a camera and try to explain why President Obama’s approval rating isn’t in the 60s, the stock answer is “he’s losing his base.”

Every time someone makes an errant comment about the health insurance reform bill that gets some progressives in a tizzy and crying, they cry that “Obama had better be careful, or he’ll lose his base.”

Obama Gets It

President Obama really does get it.

It really would be nice to go back to the old days, when the Republican minority represented “the loyal opposition,” but it’s just not going to happen until we push it, and push it hard. The “loyal opposition” concept is foreign to the far right wing that dominates the Republican Party today; if you don’t believe exactly as they do, you’re the enemy; even if 60% of your enemy’s agenda is the same as yours. In fact, that’s what Republicans found so vexing about Bill Clinton back in the day, and what they find so vexing about Obama now. Clinton and Obama are actually quite conservative, ideologically speaking.

The “loyal opposition” concept is how our country was created, it’s how we operated for two centuries, and it’s how we became the most powerful nation on earth. The two major parties, whatever they were, had differences of opinion, held spirited campaigns in which they fought tooth and nail, and sometimes got a little too personal. But in the end, when they took the oath of office, they understood that they work for the people who put them there, and they work for the good of the country above all else.
